Power plants

Hydro has rights to considerable power resources in Norway. The aim of the company is to secure an optimal utilization of these resources; this means safe and sound operation, good maintenance and continuous measures to increase efficiency.
Inside a powerplant

The total of 17 power stations for which we are responsible are located in three regions in southern Norway: Telemark, Røldal-Suldal and Sogn. Their combined production in a normal year amounts to 9.4 TWh.

We built our power stations in Telemark mainly during the first half of last century, when Hydro’s industrial activities were concentrated around Notodden, Rjukan and Porsgrunn. Since then they have undergone considerable refurbishment. Normal production at the six power stations in Telemark is 3.5 TWh.

The Røldal-Suldal power stations were built in the 1960s and they secured power supplies to Hydro’s first aluminium metal plant at Karmøy. Normal production at  Hydro’s seven power stations here is 2.8 TWh.

Our power stations in Sogn were acquired as part of the merger of Årdal Sunndal Verk (ÅSV) and Hydro’s aluminium business in 1986. Hydro modernized Tyin in 2003-2004. Normal production at Hydro’s four power stations in Sogn is 3.1 TWh.
