In Pará, Hydro is present as part-owner of Alumina do Norte do Brasil S.A. (Alunorte), the world's largest alumina refinery. Alunorte can produce up to 6.26 million tonnes of alumina per year. Hydro is also present as part-owner of Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN). Hydro started its aluminium activities in Brazil in 1974, by acquiring a five percent stake in the bauxite mines of MRN.
