1991 - 2005

Hydro continued its global expansion in aluminium and petroleum. It also moved the historic fertilizer and industrial gas businesses into the now-independent company Yara International.

We fit together like hand in glove, said Eivind Reiten, who was in charge of Hydros refinery and marketing division at the time. Reiten was appointed chairman of the board of the new partnership Hydro-Texaco a.s., which came into operation 1 January 1995.

The North Sea

In the 1970s, Norwegian oil companies played a small part in the development of oil and gas operations in the North Sea. But, by the 1990s their expertise was in demand for the most challenging projects in other parts of the world.

In 1995 the Norwegian State opened up the area off the Møre and Trøndelag coast in the 15th licensing round. And the oil companies were ready to throw themselves into really deep water.

Under the motto Focus for the future, Hydro presented a new strategy concentrating on three core areas. Based in Norway, the company would build global positions within Oil & Energy, Aluminium and Agri.

Hydro flag

Friday 15 March 2002 was an historic day for Hydro. It was the day the blue and white Hydro flag was raised at all the premises of Vereinigte Aluminiumwerke AG. Hydro and VAW had joined forces.
