Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights
The initiative to develop the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights was taken by the US and the UK governments in 2000, with the Netherlands and Norway joining later. Oil, gas, and mining companies, non-governmental organizations, and trade unions have also participated in the development of the principles.
The principles provide a framework for how companies should handle the use of security forces without being involved in human rights violations. Companies commit themselves to follow the principles and make implementation plans and progress reports.
Hydro has been a member since 2003.
