three green bullets

Stakeholder interviews 2009

“One of the most exciting of Hydro’s many climate-related activities is research that is aimed toward capturing the greenhouse gases from its aluminium production," says Einar Håndlykken, head of Norway-based Zero Emission Resource Organisation (ZERO).

The employees at Hydro’s aluminium plant in Sunndal are engaged in an initiative that, for 40 weeks, handles temporary layoffs on a “rolling” basis.

“One should never underestimate ‘the tone from the top.’ When the leader of a company communicates clearly in words and actions, it should become easier to build an internal culture with a high level of consciousness around ethics and anti-corruption,"

“The more health, safety and environment work you do, the more you realize how much more can be done, so with this in mind we will continue to improve further,” says Wayne Clifton, the Works Manager at Deeside.

It has become easier for investors to gain ground with their demands and their expectation that the companies in which they invest act responsibly and viably.

Hydro’s aluminium plant in Neuss, locally known as Rheinwerk, is the largest in Germany, with annual capacity of 230,000 tonnes. Potentially. Since February 2009, however, production has been curtailed to a low level of 50,000 tonnes.
