Through participation in the Global Compact and cooperation with Amnesty International, we try to increase awareness.
The Global Compact was initiated by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in 1999. The year after, Hydro was one of the first companies to join up. Participants commit themselves to supporting 10 principles for human rights, labor standards, the environment and fighting corruption.
Hydro has also had a partnership with Amnesty International since 2002.
- "Amnesty International is an important discussion partner who can contribute constructively to our analyses of the dilemmas we face in our business. Our goal is that Amnesty will make us better able to actively protect and promote human rights," says President and CEO Svein Richard Brandtzaeg.
- "In a partnership like this it is important for us to be independent of the company and it provides no immunity from a critical response. Yet it is very interesting for us to meet Hydro and discuss specific issues, where we can provide direct input on how the company can deal with their challenges," says political advisor Beate Ekeløve-Slydal of Amnesty International Norway.
