We know that change can hurt. Therefore it must be carried out with respect for our employees and the communities of which we are a part.
Much of our production occurs in single industry locations, where Hydro is the only large employer or one of few. In these places a strong mutual dependence develops between the company, the employees and the local community. The company is dependent on the community functioning well, while employees and the community are dependent on the company doing well.
This interdependence has instilled in us what we call "a passion for social commerce." We need each other! As a result it is important that we understand and respect each other. This requires openness and dialogue.
A trusting and positive cooperation between company management and the employees and their organizations is part of this picture. This is important, but by no means a given. Throughout history we have experienced both successful and less successful restructuring. There have been conflicts, demonstrations and strikes. The process has always been best when it was possible to have an open dialogue.
Our employees usually represent the most important contact points with the local community. But we also try to have regular contact with the authorities in the communities where we are a major employer. This is particularly important during periods of change.
