Technology

When the finance crisis hit with full force in 2008 we scrambled and cut costs across the board. There was just one area that was initially spared from substantial reductions - our research and technology development. As a result, the next time we build a new smelter, it will be the most energy efficient in the world.

Hydro has entered into a partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to develop models and analyses to optimize the recycling of aluminium.

"In some areas we need to be a world leader. This includes costs per tonne, energy efficiency, anode technology and cell design," says Hydro President and CEO Svein Richard Brandtzaeg.

Around the world, Hydro’s Research and Development teams work to create innovative solutions to the challenges we face. New and better products and manufacturing processes will not only ensure product quality and open new markets, but also safeguard the environment.
