From 1997 to 2013, Persson was executive vice president and general counsel for the Volvo Group, and member of the Volvo Group's Executive Team with responsibility for legal, compliance, internal audit and security issues. She was also secretary to the board of Volvo.

From 1993 to 1997, she was head of Volvo's corporate legal department, following a period from 1988 to 1993 as a corporate counsel. From 1982 to 1988, she was in-house legal counsel of the Swedish bank Svenska Handelsbanken. Before that, from 1979 to 1982, she practiced as an assistant judge at the Stenungsund district court.

Persson is currently board member of Platzer Fastighets Holding AB and Deutz AG. She has previously been board member of Handelsbanken, region western Sweden, member of the Swedish Industry and Commerce Stock Exchange Committee (Näringslivets Börskommitté) and board member of Sweden's second national pension fund, AP2, until 2010. She has also provided expert advisory services within various company law issues to the Swedish Ministry of Justice and has been an appointed expert of the Swedish Securities Council (Aktiemarknadsnämnden).

She has a Master of Law degree from the University of Lund in Sweden.
