Smaller carbon footprint with aluminium

Let's be honest. Are we benefiting the world's climate with our aluminium rolled products or are we harming it? We have looked at the data for a selection of our products – and found 1.3 million metric tons of CO2 net savings through the use of rolled products from Hydro.

Lighter = Cleaner mobility: At Hydro, we help to save the amount of CO2 emitted by 1.1 million motor vehicles annually – solely with the tonnage of strip we supply to the transport segment. The basis for this: the replacement of traditional materials in private and commercial vehicles with aluminium so that vehicles become lighter, use less fuel and, as a result, reduce exhaust emissions. Every kilo of aluminium used saves around 20 kg of CO2.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) reaches the atmosphere when bauxite is mined, alumina is refined, primary aluminium is produced, rolling ingots are cast and subsequently rolled, annealed and packed.

But we help reduce CO2 emissions because our aluminium products are so light, so protective, offering many good qualities for saving energy, and because they can be recycled again and again for subsequent reuse.

All our figures and data have been checked independently. The balance is positive, with the bottom line showing a net savings of 1.3 million metric tons of CO2.

How we calculated it

We wanted to compare the amount of greenhouse gases we cause with the figure we help to save. CO2 also means C02 equivalents, i.e. other gases relevant to climate change. The basis for comparison was the total amount of aluminium rolled products Hydro produced in 2009 and supplied to various market segments.

We calculated the specific effects, i.e. the volume of emissions and the CO2 savings per metric ton, from recognized studies and industry statistics.

While we were able to calculate the emissions for our entire production and factored these in, there are no recognized studies on the specific climate benefits of many applications we supply with our rolled strip and foil. As a result, our balance is still incomplete.

Denkstatt, the Viennese company renowned as an expert in sustainability reports and calculations, was commissioned by Hydro to verify our methods and figures. In this, the principles of ISO Standards 14040 and 14044 were applied. The result: Denkstatt rated the system limits of Hydro's calculations suitable, the data plausible, the calculations reproducible and the results appropriate, as well as their interpretation and presentation.

1 kg aluminium can help a lot, e.g. save 20 kg CO2 when used in cars.
