PVC industry publishes pioneering code of practice
(Sep. 26, 2001) UK-based PVC producers Hydro Polymers Ltd. and EVC (UK) Ltd. today published performance reports in accordance with the pioneering UK Eco-efficiency Code of Practice for the Manufacture of Suspension PVC. The reports show a commitment to open reporting on both specific and general issues concerning PVC production.
In October 1997, a joint press statement was issued by major UK retailers Tesco, Asda, Waitrose and the Co-operative Group, and the environmental pressure group Greenpeace. The statement challenged PVC manufacturers in the UK to "clean-up their act".
The industry responded proactively by developing with retailers a challenging and precedent-setting Code of Practice and Charter - developed under the auspices of the PVC Co-ordination Group, chaired by Jonathon Porritt, chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission and Programme Director of Forum for the Future.
"We are pleased with our progress to date, not only in relation to the Code, but with other elements of the Charter," said Dr. Jason Leadbitter, Hydro Polymers' environmental affairs manager. "The retailers deserve particular praise for initiating and supporting this successful process."
Hydro Polymers' performance according to the Code has been reported and verified in tandem with the company's latest EMAS Public Statement (2000). This Public Statement details additional environmental aspects such as waste management and energy consumption specific to the company's Newton Aycliffe site.
