Built on land leased from Tees and Hartlepool Port Authority, the terminal has a storage capacity of 1,800 tonnes of liquefied Carbon Dioxide (CO2) at -30 °C and 15 bar. Product for export is delivered into the terminal via road tankers and it is possible to unload four vehicles simultaneously. The loading rate from terminal to ship is 200 tonnes per hour.
Terra Nitrogen (UK) Ltd. ( formerly ICI), Billingham, England, has entered into a long-term supply agreement to deliver liquefied CO2 to Hydro Gas and Chemicals for export by ship. CO2 from Terra's ammonia plant is also the main source for Hydro Gas and Chemicals supply to customers in the Midlands and Northern part of the UK.
The terminal is a new link in the sourcing/distribution system and Hydro Gas and Chemicals' ships are now serving nine import terminals in Northern Europe from loading ports in Sluiskil, Netherlands, Porsgrunn, Norway, and Teesside. The export terminal means using CO2 that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.
Construction of the purpose-built terminal commenced in January 2002. It became operational under manual control just in time to cover CO2 demand peaks for brewing, beverages and cooling applications during the summer period.
A team of hands-on engineers from Hydro Gas and Chemicals, UK, were responsible for project execution. They operated the terminal in the summer while simultaneously preparing it for unmanned operation and remote control.
Reutz congratulated both the project team for its state of the art installation work, and the CO2 sourcing, shipping and wholesale organisation on its new terminal.
"This terminal will significantly boost regular sales volumes and revenues - and create additional new business opportunities. A third loading port gives us additional volumes and flexibility of supply to a growing European market."
