(March 11, 2004) Hydro Technology and Projects has been announced as the winner of the President's Safety Award for 2003. The President's Safety Award was established by Hydro in 1995. It is awarded each year to a Hydro company or operation that can document outstanding results, continual improvements and a proactive attitude to safety questions.
The unanimous jury proposal that forms the basis of the president and CEO Eivind Reiten's final decision this year, highlights seven points in Hydro Technology and Project's SU4 project:
- Strong performance and improvement
- Learning transferred from previous safety audits
- Full compliance apart from some minor observations
- High degree of employee and contractor involvement
- High visibility of project management team
- Extensive use of risk assessment
- Good housekeeping
Reiten confirmed that the SU4 project had been awarded the safety prize, when he visited the aluminium plant at Sunndalsøra on Thursday morning, together with the Norwegian Minister of the Environment Børge Brende.

During his visit, the minister was informed of the considerable environmental advantages of the major investments in Hydro's Sunndal plant.
"Hydro Technology and Projects and the SU4 project have won the prize in sharp competition with other strong candidates in Hydro. It is impressive that the extension and modernization work on SU4 has been carried out while the plant has remained in full production," said Reiten.
The prize will be awarded at Hydro's Annual General Meeting in Oslo on 11 May. Representatives for project management will be given a diploma and a picture to show that they have won the President's Safety Award for 2003. They will also be obliged to arrange a safety seminar for operations in Hydro that have not yet achieved such high results in the safety area.
The eight finalists were Hydro Aluminium's automotive component operation in Ellay Enfield in the UK, the fertilizer plant Hydro Agri Rostock in Germany, Hydro Polymers Ltd. in the UK, Vigeland Metal Refinery in Norway, which is part of Metal Products in Hydro Aluminium, the Hydro Energy unit Production, Technology and Projects in Norway, Hydro Aluminium's remelt plant in Phoenix in the US and the extrusion plant Hydro Alluminio Atessa in Italy, in addition to HTP's SU4 project.
