Alpart owners support local communities after Hurricane Ivan
(Sep. 17, 2004) Hydro and Glencore have donated USD 500,000 for reparation work to employees and the surrounding communities who suffered damage from Hurricane Ivan.
Hydro and Glencore own respectively 35 and 65 per cent of Alpart, an alumina refinery in Jamaica, that recently was hit by the hurricane.
After an assessment of the damages, Alpart plans to resume operations this weekend provided the bauxite residue depot is repaired as planned. A plan for the repair of the deposit has been approved by the Jamaican authorities.
The port area will need more time and work to be brought back into operation, but work is progressing as planned and shipments are expected to resume some time after production at the refinery has commenced.
Hydro has flexibility in its alumina sourcing and storage which ensure thatthe hurricane damages at Alpart will not affect its primary aluminium production.
The reports from Jamaica also claim that the employees and their communities did not suffer personal injury, while there is damage to property by strong winds and heavy rain.
