(Sep. 24, 2004) Hydro's aluminium business area is currently distributing the brochure "Aluminium for a viable society", a 50 page report that describes the business area's approach to a viable society.

The report, which is published in English and German, has been designed to provide internal and external stakeholders with an overall picture of Hydro Aluminium's business ambitions and activities. Its overriding objective is to show how its activities contribute to a viable society long-term.

Handling risks, grasping opportunities

"Sustainable development is about handling risks and grasping opportunities," writes Jon-Harald Nilsen, president of Hydro Aluminium, in the report's foreword. And he points out: "Our business ambition goes beyond developing products that serve today's needs in the market. We commit ourselves to long-term solutions."

This is to be achieved through a high standard of health, safety, environment and social responsibility throughout the whole value chain. Nilsen encourages employees, partners, suppliers and customers to join forces to help Hydro Aluminium become the best performer in the industry.

Invitation to dialogue

"This report," says Franziska Schlué, Hydro's project manager for the report, "tells the story of how Hydro Aluminium contributes to a viable future through its processes and products, its relations with employees, partners, customers and the communities in which we are located. It reveals our approach to key sustainability issues that have proved to be relevant."

PROJECT MANAGER: The aluminium report project manager has been Franziska Schlué.

These issues have been defined in a comprehensive internal process involving many parts of the organization and they fall into the three main areas People, Value chain and Business development to form the basis of the report. In addition, the report describes Hydro's management systems and the business area's value base.

The report is also intended as an invitation to stakeholders to take part in a targeted dialogue on key issues.

Schlué continues: "For us, sustainability is an area of continuous learning. We don't have all the answers, but are working systematically to find them, and constructive dialogue with our stakeholders will support us in this process."
