Grevenbroich goes to school

(April 27, 2005) How can schoolchildren prepare better for a professional life, for example in Hydro? One way is to have the plants cooperate with schools. Hydro has an example in Grevenbroich.

AGREEMENT: Head of Human Resources at Hydro's Grevenbroich plant, Cordula Dreßler, and School Head Master Hans Bohnen signed the cooperation paper. Standing at left, Chief Instructor Manfred Geissen.

The German plant has signed a cooperation agreement with the Roman Catholic secondary school, Grevenbroich Center. The agreement will lead to on-location work in learning and teaching - on both sides - for pupils as well as for teachers, Hydro apprentices and instructors.

The agreement is the second of its kind that Hydro has in the Rhine district of Neuss, following a public initiative to strengthen ties from school to profession. Hydro's objective is to facilitate the often-fearful way from here to there - and to improve Hydro's search for possible talents for more technical jobs in production and maintenance.

Hydro Aluminium Neuss has paved the way with a continuing partnership with a school in its neighborhood.

Clear commitment

"This is just another sign of our clear commitment to the future of this plant," says Grevenbroich plant manager Udo Litzenberger.

Today, the huge rolling mill employs a large number of electricians, mechanics and other professionals. "Hydro is also showing foresight by enabling students to be better qualified to start possible apprenticeships in the company," he says.

The plant hires more than 20 new apprentices each year for three-year (plus one optional year) periods on the job.

"Your workshop, with its excellent equipment, is very good for us. We will benefit from this," says school director/headmaster Hans Bohnen, thanking Hydro for taking the initiative. His key contact will be Manfred Geissen, head of the instruction workshop at the Grevenbroich site.

Public recognition is already assured. When the agreement was signed by Bohnen and his deputy, Heinrich Euler, as well as by Geissen and Hydro HR manager Cordula Dressler, some local godfathers signed, too. Grevenbroich mayor Axel Prümm, school inspector Dieter Reich and District School Department head Tillmann Lonnes will promote and support the cooperation.
