Bécancour magnesium plant honored for achievement in sustainability

(Nov. 14, 2005) For years, Hydro's magnesium plant in Bécancour has invested a lot, and the personnel has been putting time and efforts on the reduction of SF6, a gas with huge negative impacts in terms of greenhouse effects. The work is paying off.

One ton of SF6 sent to the atmosphere is the equivalent of 23,900 tons of carbon dioxide. Hydro's efforts have reduced by 99.4 percent its emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere at Bécancour.

At a meeting held in Montréal on November 9, with more than 450 guests attending, the Quebec Energy Efficiency Association formally recognized this excellence by awarding Hydro Magnesium's production plant in Canada with the Energia Award in the "Sustainability – Industrial sector" category.

Jean Laperrière, head of Environment at the Bécancour magnesium plant, and Jean-Alain Laurin, head of Process Engineering, received the award from Thomas Mulcair, who is Quebec Minister for Sustainable Development and Environment.

The plant also received the EcoGESte Award in 2001, for its achievement in Environment over the previous decade.

The Hydro Magnesium plant in Bécancour started operations in 1989, and remains the most modern large-scale pure magnesium producer in the world.
