Improved work processes

We strive to improve the way we work through continuous improvement processes and determined cooperation throughout our global organization. Our AMPS program is a great example

AMPS stands for Aluminium Metal Production System, and it is our common platform for improvement.

The principles of AMPS are standardized work processes, defined customer and supplier relationships, optimized flow, dedicated teams, and visible leadership.

AMPS ensures that employees are involved, challenged and get feedback, the organization has been built for continued and long-term improvements, standards are established for stable production, and other internal tools like our Total Productivity Management and Best Practice Sharing systems can be used in the best way.

“Our results are created by our employees,” says Tom Petter Johansen, head of Primary Production. “The competence, motivation and performance of the individuals are our most important resource, and this resource has to be given attention accordingly.”

By getting everyone to play by the same rules, use the same best practices, and so on, Hydro can maximize performance throughout the organization.

The system was launched first with pilot projects in Norway, and is now being rolled out in the global organization. An AMPS Academy, attended by operators and managers, gives a solid foundation for taking the system back to the plants.

Employees like the opportunity to get more involved.  “AMPS means that operators will improve their skills,” says Billy Fredagsvik, union representative from Høyanger, Norway, and a member of Hydro's corporate assembly.
