FOBS - forging stock

FOBS for aluminium forging, bending, stamping

An alternative in aluminium

Hydro's aluminium forging material FOBS™/® is an alternative to coiled cast forging stock. It is an extruded aluminium product that can be cold drawn to reduce the number of required forging steps and handling operations, and to improve recovery and reduce manufacturing costs at forging companies.

Key features

  • Can reduce or skip heat treatment after forging
  • With specific design, no inter-stage annealing necessary
  • Less porosity, absence of internal defects
  • High forging productivity due to fine surface quality, tight tolerances
  • More complex parts can be formed due to small grain structure
  • Smooth surface after forging without additional machining or polishing
  • Superior artificial-aging properties and elongation
  • High fatigue strength
  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Various coil sizes (from 100 kg - 2500 kg)

Product details

Hydro offers a complete range of aluminium alloys including high-strength alloys that reach mild steel properties. We supply tight tolerances: +0/-1% (with a minimum of 0,1mm) on the extruded product, and +/-0,03 mm for OD<15mm; +/- 0,05mm when OD>15mm by adding a drawing step. We also service customers who specify material without charge weld areas.

Industries we serve

  • Automotive and transport
  • Building and construction

Extrusion

Aluminium can be extruded and shaped into a variety of tubes and profiles.

Aluminium ingot is heated and pressed through shaping tools, to make profiles for various products. Aluminium is increasingly taking over from copper as preferred metal for tubing in heat exchangers and air conditioners. There is no end to what shapes aluminium end products can take.
