Aluminium Prefabs Still Standing

In 1948, a row of aluminium prefabs was erected for temporary housing.  Building materials were scarce but aluminium from scrapped planes was available, and could be quickly formed into easy to erect modular housing.

aluminium prefab buildingPreviously recycled from pots and pans into planes as part of the war effort, the aluminium then became important for housing the many who had lost their homes, showing that recycling aluminium has been with us since 1920.


Those prefabs can still be seen across the country, still housing people, with some of them now listed buildings.
