The Taurus Max range of windows offers a portfolio of anti-vandal products and is the first aluminium window range in the UK to achieve the commercial security standard STS202 BR1 and BR2, recognised by ACPO Secured by Design.

Secured by Design, is a nationwide police initiative promoting the principle of designing out crime and exceeds the commonly held BS7950 domestic standard for windows and doors.

“We identified that there was an urgent need for an aluminium range of windows that met commercial security standards”, says Dave Simms, ATB’s Commercial Manager.

“Architects can now for the first time specify an aluminium window to commercial security standards which has until now been applicable only to steel windows and doors.”

Hydro Aluminium Extrusion UK provides the aluminium extrusions that make up ATB’s Taurus Max range.

Colin O’Neill, HAE UK Sales Development Manager explains.

“The extrudability of Aluminium means that it is easily formed into custom shapes which is why it is the most common commercial framing material.”

“Aluminium is also extremely durable, it does not warp or rust and does not need painting to protect its surface from normal environmental conditions, as a result it requires virtually no future maintenance.”

“However it is the structural strength and light weight of aluminium which makes it particularly suitable for this application where a high level of security is required for the Taurus Max range without excessive weight.”

In order to achieve the required level of security examiners were given three minutes over a 2 hour period to attack the window using a variety of tools to identify its weakest point.

They were then given a further 3 minutes within a 15 min time frame to exploit that weak point with the aim of opening the window or breaking the glass in order to pass a life-size dummy through it.

The window passed the test and was awarded the STS202 (BR2 level) standard.

The range offers a variety of combinations: fixed, top hung, side hung casements and parallel opening as well as safety and ventilation features.

Additional security has been built in to the Taurus Max casement windows with a unique anti-vandal mesh which delivers a visual and physical deterrent without compromising on light transmission.

Unlike retro fit mesh that can stop or restrict light, the glass protection mesh is incorporated as part of the integral profile resulting in clean lines, anti tamper performance and excellent light transmittance.

Externally windows appear to be glazed with an attractive bronze tinted glass but the mesh offers considerable protection against break in and air rifle attack as well as being a visual deterrent.

The Taurus Max casement window with integral mesh has been tested in accordance with STS202 BR3.

Dave Simms adds, “The unique combination of enhanced security and visually attractive windows and doors means that the Taurus Max range offers an aesthetically pleasing solution with the added security the particular location demands.”

“The mesh can be used on vulnerable elevations in conjunction with standard products elsewhere to give a cohesive look to a building where security is paramount but without compromising on design.”
