Forming

Aluminium extrusions can be formed using the same equipment as for other metals.

Forming can take place with higher temper (T6) metal for larger radii but smaller ones usually require lower tempers such as T4, as manufactured (F) or possibly annealed (o).

It is possible to harden to full strength after forming, for example, bending in T4 and then ageing to the T6 temper.

Forming should be carried out before anodising to reduce the risk of the anodised layer cracking.

Bending
High shaping accuracy. The extrusion is held tightly in position and bending takes place by the tool and former moving.

Stretch forming
With or without internal and external supports for the extrusion. The extrusion is held tightly in tension and rotates around a former to achieve the desired shape.

Roller bending
Used to bend extrusions with large radii. The extrusion is rolled between three wheels of which one is adjustable. It is possible to vary the radius on the same component using CNC-controlled machines.

Press bending
Suitable for simpler operations in large batches. The parts are shaped in a two-part tool using, for example, an eccentric or hydraulic press.
