Charge air cooler

Some cars, especially diesel cars, are equipped with a turbo charger in order to increase the performance of the motor. In order to cool the air, a special heat exchanger called Charge Air Cooler is needed.

Hydro aluminium tubes & products that can be used in this application:

  • Multi Port Extruded tubes
  • Welded Tubes

Aluminium charge air coolerThe performance is increased by adding extra oxygen to the combustion process.

The exhaust gas is led into a turbine
driving a compressor:

  • The compressor sucks in air and increases pressure and thereby temperature
  • The air is cooled in a charge air cooler (CAC) and let into the engine.

Cooling is needed:

  • 180ºC is not good for the motor
  • Colder air leads to higher efficiency of the motor as colder air has a higher density resulting in increasing amount of oxygen.
  • Therefore a charge air cooler (CAC) is used

Aluminium tubes for charge air coolerThe charge air cooler (CAC) is a slightly different heat exchanger as the fluid is air. Due to the low heat transfer coefficient between air and surface, a large internal surface is needed in the tubes. Therefore, welded aluminium tubes (large rectangular or flat-oval tubes)with inserts or large Multi Port Extruded tubes with internal webs are used for this type of heat exchangers.
