Hydro Aluminium FAQ refrigerant

Is aluminium applicable for CO2?
Hydro Aluminium Precision Tubing: Yes, aluminium is especially well suited for CO2 applications. With proper design of the tubes in question, high burst pressure requirements can be fulfilled while still maintaining low weight of the overall system. At the same time, the material members can readily be joined through brazing by correct alloy selection.

Is aluminium applicable with water?
Hydro Aluminium Precision Tubing: Yes, aluminium is applicable with conventional water. However, it requires some consideration when galvanically coupled to more noble materials - and with impurities and oxygen present in the water. For seawater applications, so-called seawater aluminium alloys are recommended and, in addition, galvanic coupling should be considered here as well. Besides, to prevent corrosion attacks from water, a mix of glycol and additives can be added to the water.

Is aluminium applicable with ammonia?
Hydro Aluminium Precision Tubing: Dry ammonia gas will not cause any problems. In solutions containing up to 10 percent water, some corrosion will occur, but a film will be formed which slows down and finally stops the reaction. There is good experience with the use of ammonia with up to 5 percent water in refrigeration systems. Even up to 2.5 percent seawater has been shown to have no effect on the good corrosion properties of aluminium in ammonia.
