Customers replacing copper choose aluminium training

Another group of customers which is replacing copper tubing with aluminium tubing in solar applications has just returned home with new technical knowledge after participating in brazing workshops hosted by Hydro.

STRONG RESPONSE: Hydro's Patrick Jansson says the latest brazing workshop, held in Solingen, Germany, was offered as a direct result of the positive feedback received after a similar workshop last May. That session attracted 17 companies from 10 countries. (Photo: Everwand & Fell)

The training program was held from November 8-10. Six identical workshops were arranged – two per day – with participants choosing the one most convenient. The 42 customers represented a dozen countries from Europe and the Middle East.

Four companies cooperated in arranging the brazing workshops, starting with Hydro, the global leader in aluminium precision tubing for heat transfer applications. The others:

  • FLUX Lötstoffe (brazing materials)
  • SMI Italia (tube processing machines)
  • Everwand & Fell (burners and automatic brazing machines)

"We offer these workshops because customers find the brazing process one of the most challenging changes to their production processes, when they switch to aluminium tubing from copper tubing," says Patrick Jansson, a business developer for Hydro's aluminium precision tubing organization.

Different, better

Customers received basic brazing theory, including explanations on how aluminium brazing is different from copper brazing, and shopfloor demonstrations.

SMI Italia also presented its tube processing machine, which produces manifold tubes for solar absorbers in one combined process, and Everwand & Fell showed its automatic brazing machine, which brazed the 8 mm aluminium tubes to 22 mm manifold tubes.

In addition, manual hand brazing was demonstrated, with participants invited to braze aluminium individually.

The next training workshops for customers in the solar industry will take place in December and in February 2012. Interested in joining? Contact Patrick Jansson in Hydro.
