When H&H Trailers approached Hydro to supply aluminum extruded components for their aluminum trailer line, they asked if there was an alloy that provided a better surface finish than the 6061 alloy they were currently using. A high quality and durable finish is a critical issue for H&H because the extruded components on the trailers not only have to withstand the constant exposure to the elements, but need to reflect the aesthetics of the “adult toys” that many of the trailers transport.
The right alloy
The 6061 alloy offers excellent hardness and weldability but does not provide the best finish and durability. For H&H, Hydro recommended switching to a 6005A aluminum alloy which delivers the same weld characteristics of the 6061 while giving a better surface finish. Although not as hard as 6061, its strength was more than sufficient for the needs of the H&H Trailers extruded components.
In addition to providing a superior surface, 6005A holds tolerances better than 6061. H&H Trailers found that the switch to 6005A made their work easier. They reported 6005A provided better repeatability and weldability to go along with the better looking and more durable finish. They have heard excellent reports from their dealers about customers expressing a preference for the new, better looking trailers.
Scrap buyback strengthens partnership
Hydro sources the metal for H&H extrusions from its adjacent remelt casthouse which produces primary grade billet containing more than 70% recycled content. Knowing the source of the scrap metal allowed Hydro to extend a scrap buyback program to H&H Trailers that included a premium payment above the third-party market for general aluminum scrap. The scrap buyback deal not only strengthened the partnership with H&H Trailers, but also contributed to a more “green” production process with the scrap returning to its original source for recycling.
Fast turnaround critical to H&H Trailer success
H&H Trailers offers a wide range of car trailers with load capacities ranging from 1,500 to 14,000 lb. Each trailer is built to order with a typical two-week turnaround time. With that tight schedule, H&H Trailers relies on Hydro to meet a standard lead time for delivering the many profiles that make up the main frames, cross members, planking and other trailer parts. In addition to controlling shipping costs and optimizing their working capital, it gives H&H Trailers the extruded components they need, when they need them.
