Hydro, Adrian Steel: Wearing different hats

"It’s 6:15 and I’m Bob the painter” begins one of Nissan’s ‘tongue in cheek’ radio commercials to introduce their new NV commercial van.

The commercial focuses on the NV’s versatility – a result of the interior shelving systems and other extruded items supplied by Adrian Steel (& Hydro) to customize the vehicle for individual vocational needs.

Last year Nissan Commercial Vehicles announced their partnership with Adrian Steel to upfit the 2012 NV. The NV, Nissan’s first entry into the North American commercial vehicle market, was designed to address the van segment’s unmet customer needs; it is the result of more than five years of detailed research.

"Adrian Steel is honored to be a partner for the new Nissan NV Commercial Van" said Dalton Cheaney, Nissan account manager for Adrian Steel.  "We will help the Nissan commercial customer optimize their vehicle by providing them cargo management solutions."

The theme to the Nissan NV’s radio ads is “wearing different hats”. The NV’s configuration supports this mantra, offering various adds-on and customizations designed to meet a variety of user needs – all of which are made possible through the partnership Adrian Steel and Hydro share.

“We designed the Nissan NV to reinvent the commercial van segment,” said Joe Castelli, vice president, Nissan Commercial Vehicles. “This partnership with Adrian Steel will help our customers – such as electricians, HVAC contractors, plumbers and builders – get the most out of their vehicle.”

One reinvention includes employing aluminum in the framework used to secure the utility van’s cabinetry. The NV features a wide range of shelving, specialty storage and roof rack options and Hydro Kalamazoo has been the driving force behind offering a light weight aluminum solution to the traditional steel framework used in past, interior shelving systems.

The plant extrudes and fabricates several products which hold the utility vehicle's cabinets in place.  The products are supplied using a Just in time (JIT) production method using Kanban signals to drive manufacturing and delivery of product.

“It took us two years to convince Adrian Steel to move to aluminum, said Steve Borst, Territory manager - Kalamazoo. “They were concerned about cost but at the end of the day, they came to appreciate the properties of aluminum.”
