Extrusions sitting pretty

NorSap manufactures seats for machine operators and drivers for leisure craft and commercial vessels with aluminium extrusions as crucial design material.

January 5, 2011

NorSap specialises in manufacturing aluminium products for leisure craft and commercial vessels. The main focus of the business is the development and manufacture of seats for machine operators and drivers.

Extrusions in the driver’s seat
In NorSap’s line of business you can definitely say that the company puts aluminium in the driver’s seat. Aluminium extrusions are an important material in the wide range of seats for machine operators and drivers where they are used for components like pillars, footrests and deck rails. The company is market leader in Norway and also plays an important role internationally with dealers and representatives in over 20 countries. Customers cover a wide spectrum from private boat owners, shipyards and shipowners to the defence forces of various countries.

Optimally customised
NorSap’s seats are not only found on the bridge of a ship. A large number end up as operator seats for cranes, winches and even for the remote control of midget submarines. The seats are highly specialised and the designs optimally adapted for the maritime environment. Based on the standard range, each seat is fully customised. Many orders involve the integration of control systems with advanced electronic equipment that is built into specially designed armrests.

Control systems are integrated in the specially designed armrests of many seats. The seat’s telescopic column has a protective casing of aluminium extrusions.
Quality and precision
With many years’ specialist experience from the development and manufacture of aluminium components and products, NorSap is well qualified for this work. The company has a large design and development department ready to deal with continuous challenges presented by its customers. Aluminium extrusions are an integral part of NorSap’s seat designs and are made to have an optimal balance between strength and weight with tight tolerances which give the telescopic seat pillars the necessary strength. In an environment of continuous movement, vibration and jolting that are transmitted to the seat could seriously damage its function and durability.

“This makes great demands on the quality and precision not least when it comes to the extrusions from HAP,” says Øyvind Berntsen, managing director of NorSap. “Here ‘approximations’ won’t do!”

The effort put into the extrusion design has resulted in clean, smooth surfaces and integrated functions for concealed joints and channels for cables. Together with the other features and materials of the seats this clearly shows the seats’ high quality and functionality.

Close cooperation
NorSap and Hydro Aluminium Profiler can look back on decades of close cooperation. HAP supplies extrusions both in metre form and as machined components ready to use. The cooperation also covers technical service for the optimisation of extrusion design, functions and characteristics.

NorSap’s vision of the future is clear with continued focus on innovative, customised solutions with high quality, good service and good systems that meet market demands!

This, combined with a clear focus on marketing and brand creation, will create the foundation for continued expansion. Not least in export markets with the emphasis on America.

With extrusions clearly in the driving seat!
