MLR is enjoying great success with its mobile lighting rigs that make it possible for grass to grow in sports stadiums even during dark, cold periods. Today the rigs are used in nearly 40 sports arenas in ten countries! Gamla Ullevi in Gothenburg is one of the latest to be added to the list.

Mobile Lighting Rig (MLR) makes mobile aluminium stands on wheels fitted with high-power sodium lamps mounted on booms. The system is modular and the units can be used individually or connected together as required. The artificial light from the rigs creates the perfect conditions for the growth of hard-wearing grass throughout the year! A more detailed article can be found in the previous edition of ProfilPressen.

MLR has supplied its rigs to several countries in Europe and the USA. The Guldfågeln Arena in Kalmar was recently added to the list of users in Sweden that includes the national football stadium, Råsunda, in Stockholm, the Swedbank Stadium in Malmö and Olympia Stadion in Helsingborg. One of the newest installations is to be found at Gamla Ullevi in Gothenburg where they have battled for many years with a poor quality pitch despite extensive work and increasing maintenance costs. At the beginning of March this year a rig from MLR was installed that consists of three modules with a total of 294 thousand-watt lamps!

The MLR rig at Gamla Ullevi in Gothenburg consists of three modules with artificial sunshine in the form of 294 thousand-watt lamps!

Here they have adopted an overall approach with a variety of measures over and above the lighting rigs. These include better preliminary work, a more light-weight machine park and not least British consultants who have extensive experience from sports arenas in the UK with the similar problems. Roger Wikholm, grounds master at Gamla Ullevi is enthusiastic. “We can clearly see positive results and are very pleased. One example is our biggest problem, the area that’s most in the shade. This now has the best quality grass of all!” The grass at Gamla Ullevi is subject to extremely hard wear as it is the home ground of three top division men’s clubs and one of Sweden’s leading women’s teams. Together they play a total of 60 home matches a season. MLR’s lighting rigs, which are in use virtually every day, bode well for brilliant results!
