In Qatar as a controller

Marit started with Hydro after getting her MA in Finance. She joined the company partly because of the opportunities to work and live abroad, so she jumped at the chance to go to Qatar to work at the joint venture between Hydro and Qatar Petroleum.

Learning from different cultures

“I loved traveling to Qatalum, where I got to learn from people of different nationalities, and I got to know Hydro’s soul. I was so lucky that my Norwegian boss had lived in Qatar for eight years. He had a great understanding of the Qatari and Arab way of living, and vast experience working in a multinational setting.”

Safe plant

In her position as Controller, Marit assessed key performance indicators for all operational units as well as staff in Qatalum. As Hydro places an extremely high value on safety, she was happy to see that Hydro had influenced business and safety practices in the plant for the better.

Good mentoring

From the beginning, she was given a mentor who was happy to share her knowledge and experience to accelerate Marit’s learning curve. “You meet with a lot of challenges here right away, but the cooperative spirit ensures there is always someone willing to help you out.”

She likes working for a company that she calls “a tangible value creator.” “Recently, I read an article on a flight about how aluminium made for a lighter plane emitting less CO2. I smiled inside knowing I was part of an industry creating greener transport solutions.”
