Trusted his gut feeling

In 2008 the newly qualified civil engineer Morten Elverhøi was offered a job at Hydro's aluminium plant in Årdal. He trusted his gut feeling and took the job. Today he manages the casthouse at the plant.

What got you interested in the engineering profession?

"I worked three summers as an intern at Hydro's aluminium plant in Sunndal while I was a student. The many engineering students who worked there at the same time made me more interested in the field. I feel my education was very good. It was interdisciplinary with a mix of technical, financial and management subjects. The program had a good reputation, and those who had graduated had done very well in business."

"I chose Hydro because I had heard many good things about the company. I had also got to know it well through my summer jobs. There are many different opportunities in Hydro, whether you want to be an analyst, academic or manager. We are well supervised and at the same time have a lot of influence on our own development."

What is a typical workday like for you?

"The day starts with a quick status update on HSE (health, safety and environment) and operations. Then we usually have a WOC exercise, which is a risk analysis of work situations to further improve them and safety at the plant. This is often followed by meetings or tasks related to improvement projects, plans or strategies."

Elverhøi lives in Øvre Årdal with his family. He spends a lot of his free time outdoors.

"Årdal has a lot of great natural scenery, and when hunting and fishing seasons starts, I try to get out as much as possible. Otherwise, I try to get in some exercise between work and the kids."

Why did you choose Årdal?

"The aluminium plant in Årdal has a long proud history and strong expertise in many areas. There are excellent opportunities for development and career advancement and I have received training in many areas. Hydro is good at using internal resources for this. If you want new challenges, there are lots of possibilities."
