Basic facts

Hydro’s 17 power stations help secure power supplies to our industrial activity in Norway. Among them are some of the biggest power stations in the country. We are now working to secure the availability of power and develop our metal operations in Norway.

Hydro’s energy operations have been brought together into the one business area:

  • In an average year, the business area handles approximately 9.4 TWh of the hydro-electric power it produces itself, which is about 7-11 TWh.
  • Hydro’s normal production of hydroelectric power is eqivalent to the energy consumption of 350,000 households.
  • Hydro can avail itself of additional power through long-term contracts.
  • We balance our power portfolio by trading on Nord Pool, the Nordic energy exchange.

Hydro’s power production is administered from Oslo, and a joint operations center in Rjukan oversees all our power stations. The power stations are located in the counties of Sogn and Fjordane, Rogaland, Hordaland and Telemark.

Hydro is joint-owner of several other hydroelectric power stations:

  • SKS Produksjon AS, in which Hydro owns 20.9 percent, has an annual production of 1.7 TWh, divided between eight power stations in Salten, four in Sulitjelma, three in Sundsfjord and one in Bodø.
  • Hydro owns 33 percent of Skafså power station, while Vest-Telemark Kraftlag owns 67 percent. Production takes place in the power stations of Åmdal, Osen, Skree and Gausbu.
