Technology

Hydroelectric power is a perpetual, renewable and CO2-free resource. Our challenge is to utilize the resources at our disposal in the most efficient way possible.
Hydropower technology

Even though hydroelectric power technology can be considered a very mature resource, it is still possible to refine the way in which it is used. It is also possible to produce even more power from water systems that have already been developed.

We have started work on plans to increase the efficiency of Tyin power station. On its journey to Tyin power station, the water falls about 1,000 meters through tunnels and pipelines from Lake Torolmen.

A three kilometer long pressure pipe, or penstock, presses the water down through high-pressure jets and into the turbine. The pressure at the base of the pipeline is so great that the water is thrust against the turbine blades at tremendous force to drive the rotor.

  • The generator is a large dynamo that stores electricity at voltages of between 3,000 and 13,000 volts.
  • Before the electricity is distributed to consumers through the grid, the voltage is stepped up to around 132,000 volts.
  • Voltage and amperage are mutually dependent. Amperage is therefore reduced when the voltage increases. This is how energy loss can be reduced during transmission.
  • Before the electricity reaches the consumer the voltage is reduced to 230 volts.
  • The electricity is transformed the correct voltage in a transformer close to the consumer. This minimizes energy loss.

Most of Hydro’s power stations are automated, but that nevertheless require continuous maintenance and monitoring.
