The current investment of 80 million euros in hot roll 1 is intended to increase the hot rolling capacity by more than 150,000 tons per year. It is just one of the ongoing activities and regular projects to maintain and expand the facilities; these amount to around 50 million euros each year. This secures a worldwide leading position for Aluminum Norf GmbH, as the core element of Hydro's magical aluminum cluster with the Rheinwerk Neuss as a smelter and recycler, and the Grevenbroich plant as a leading location for refining top-quality products from rolled aluminum.

On April 30, 1965, the then shareholders Alcan and VAW signed the social contract for the foundation and construction of Alunorf. Operation started two years later. The first full-year production in 1968 was 60,000 tons, with 400 employees at the time. With the addition of a second hot rolling mill, Alunorf became the only aluminum plant in the world with two hot rolls and the largest of its kind in the world, which now delivers 1.5 million tons per year.

Because of its size, Alunorf would be far too strong in the competition, so the concept of two owners who are in competition must be maintained. Hydro acquired a 50 percent stake in Alunorf in 2002 as part of the integration of what was then VAW, which also created Europe's leading rolling group - with significant synergies between Grevenbroich, Rheinwerk and Alunorf, including a closed cycle for recycling material after its use was formed.

In this list, aluminum processed by Alunorf may be used throughout Europe and beyond: & nbsp; as printing plates for newspapers, as bonnets, doors and other components in automobiles and elsewhere in the transport sector, as yoghurt lids, beverage cans and in many applications more ... but neither the Alunorf brand is advertised nor does it appear on the products. This makes Alunorf a "secret giant" in the aluminum industry. Two high-ranking awards, from the private energy academy and the state-owned German energy agency Dena, honored Alunorf in 2014 for a pioneering innovation in the efficient use of energy - just a highlight of the efficiency of Alunorf.

On May 1st, the 2,300 Alunorf employees and 800 pensioners today celebrated their 50 successful years with a big family party. Kjetil Ebbesberg, Hydro Group Executive Board member responsible for the Rolled Products business area, said "Thank you for your strong performance" to Alunorf and looked ahead to future success based on secure processes and productive teamwork. NRW Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft also sent a greeting with congratulations on the anniversary and wrote: "There are many good reasons for an aluminum industry at Alunorf that will continue to be successful in the future."
