Lubricants have always been used in mechanical processing: on the one hand in the form of cooling lubricants to dissipate heat and on the other hand oils to reduce friction and thus wear. For years there have been a few companies that sometimes dry-machine their semi-finished aluminum products. We have now made the decision for Hydro's own machining centers not only to carry out the milling without cooling lubricants and oils, but also to carry out other machining stages dry. This is the only way we can guarantee that our customers can receive their profiles with the valuable addition “100% dry machined”.

Dry machining technology

With dry machining, profiles are machined without the use of emulsion and cooling lubricant. This new environmentally friendly technology requires the use of special tools with a special cutting geometry and an innovative coating. With us you will now receive your aluminum products 100% dry machined.

More sustainable value chain

Aluminum is a key component for a more climate-friendly circular economy. Nevertheless, we are also aware of the challenges in making the entire value chain of our products more sustainable. In our production facilities in particular, we have started to pursue the goal of sustainability and to give this goal significant weight in our daily decisions. We question production processes with regard to their resource requirements, the type and origin of the resources used, their impact on the environment and their recyclability. In addition to this ongoing process, which brings us ever closer to the maximum possible conservation of resources, avoiding operating resources is the greatest possible step towards sustainability.

What means dry machining to you and your product?

The advantages that result from machining without cooling lubricant in all value-added stages of further processing are diverse:

  • The elimination of the cooling lubricant has positive effects on the quality of the product: a lower risk of corrosion, reduced burr formation on the profile and no adhesion of chips.
  • No environmental pollution due to the emission of lubricants and no resource-polluting treatment of the lubricants after use.
  • The washing process for cleaning the profiles is no longer necessary: ​​the profiles are clean after blowing with compressed air and can be packed directly. This means a reduced cleaning and pre-treatment effort for further processing stages.
  • Reduction of waste: Elimination of the residues of cooling lubricant on the profile avoid residues on the packaging material, so that it can be reused.
  • Improved working environment in production: No health risks from lubricant-containing aerosols in the hall and a clean workplace for improved safety.
