We have set ambitious climate, environmental, and social targets for the coming years until 2050. The ambitions are interdependent, and should be considered holistically. Our sustainability targets address our external impact. Internally, we continue our efforts in HSE, Compliance, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging and other important areas to ensure a sustainable work environment based on inclusion of our differences.
We are on track to reduce our own emissions by 10% by 2025 and by 30% by 2030 from a 2018 baseline.
We are committed to net zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.
We are developing zero-carbon greener aluminium to meet market expectations and enable customers to reduce their carbon footprint.
Our main pathways to achieving our goals are more recycling of post-consumer scrap aluminium and technological advances in primary aluminium production, such as chloride production and carbon capture and storage.
We expect to be able to produce our first near-zero volumes of aluminium around 2022.
We are reducing greenhouse gas emissions in society at large by delivering climate-friendly solutions. We are increasing renewable energy production, exploring energy storage and solutions, working to develop green hydrogen to replace fossil fuels, and we will continue to grow in low-carbon and recycled aluminium.
We will start reporting on Scope 3 emissions for 2021 and we will work on setting longer-term Scope 3 targets by the end of 2022.
(Greenhouse Gas Protocol: Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned or controlled sources. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling consumed. Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that occur in the value chain.)
No net loss of biodiversity in new projects.
Reduce material non-GHG emissions by 30%, by 2030, from a 2018 baseline.
Eliminate the need for new permanent bauxite residue storage from 2050 and eliminate landfilling of all other recoverable waste by 2040.
Our social policy is based on improving the lives of the people we affect and supporting system changes.
We want to equip people with essential skills and training for the future economy.
We will do this by supporting education for upskilling and reskilling for future jobs, training, and skills development programs both directly and via partners and strengthening educational institutions. Our target is to help 500,000 people by 2030.
Contribute to economic development in the societies where we operate.
Transparency and traceability of key sustainability data for our products.
