Extrusion process

The aluminium first comes in the form of a billet, is heated to around 500°C and then placed in the extrusion press. Once the aluminium has passed through the die, it is quenched by air or water. The extruded bar is then stretched in order to release any residual tension. Depending on requirements, the profiles are cut to the required length and placed in the tempering furnaces to give them the desired mechanical characteristics. After a cycle of about 4 hours, the profiles are finally ready for use.

The die

The tools used to produce the most complex profile shapes are what we call the die. This is designed and manufactured for each profile section. There are two types of dies:

  • Flat dies for the production of non-tubular profiles such as flat sections
  • Tubular dies for the production of tubular profiles, e.g. a rectangular tube
