The three partners Panasonic, Equinor and Hydro believe that Norway has an attractive starting point for establishing profitable and sustainable battery production. The solid expertise that already exists in materials technology, process industry, energy and industrial development provides a solid foundation for building a battery factory in Norway. In addition, the availability of renewable electric power is important.

The companies now want a dialogue with Norwegian municipalities and regions to identify relevant places where it is possible to build a large-scale battery factory.

10-15 possible places

Panasonic, Equinor and Hydro are working in parallel to assess the market for lithium-ion batteries in Europe, as part of the basis for assessing a battery business in Norway. The work in the first phase will continue until the middle of 2021.

Establishment and operation of a battery business requires access to power and water for cooling and a population base that can ensure access of approx. 2,000 skilled operators and personnel with college / university education. It is also a significant logistics operation with the goal of efficient and as sustainable transport of raw materials in, and finished batteries out to customers in Europe.

The companies aim to identify 10-15 possible locations that meet the needs of a battery factory. The next step will then be to focus on a maximum of three competitive alternatives by mid-2021.

The factory can be started up in 2025, and depends on the conclusions in the initial mapping phase and further investment decisions.

Proposals for relevant plots, including relevant information, are to be received by 28 January 2021 and can be sent to: contact@jointbatteryinitiative.com
