Green Furniture chooses Hydro CIRCAL in its drive toward a sustainable transformation

Green Furniture Concept wants to drive change in the furniture industry. They want to see a sustainable transformation. So they chose aluminium – low-carbon aluminium – as the material for a key component of their new series, Ascent.

The Swedish company designs furniture for airports and other indoor public spaces, and it clearly knows what it is doing. Its seating solutions grace airports from Europe to North America to Australia, and many destinations in between.

“We're here to make a change in public interiors, but also to drive a sustainable transformation in the furniture industry," says Green Furniture founder and designer Johan Berhin.

As an example, he points to the Ascent series, which just won the Red Dot Award for high design quality.

Corrosion-resistant and infinitely recyclable

The goal with Ascent, used for airport gate seating, was to develop seating that was light, strong and sustainable. Using aluminium in the construction therefore made good sense. “Since we are interested in circular economy,” says creative designer Hanna Carlsson, “we found Hydro and CIRCAL a perfect fit.”

The aluminium support beam running under Ascent’s seating elements has been manufactured with low-carbon Hydro CIRCAL, which is recycled aluminium made with a minimum of 75% post-consumer aluminium scrap. Corrosion-resistant and infinitely recyclable, it is the perfect metal for furniture.

Other materials in the Ascent series also have been chosen with sustainability in mind. The legs are made of recycled metal, the wood for the seats comes from certified sources to support sustainable forestry, and the feet on the legs are recycled from ocean plastics.
