Community engagement

Our company’s purpose is to create more viable societies. To succeed with this, we need to engage and work with a range of stakeholders. These include our customers, competitors, suppliers, business partners, NGOs, authorities and local communities

Engaging with our stakeholders helps us understand what is expected of us, what is important to our stakeholders and how we can solve common challenges. As a global company, we participate in a wide range of activities, from local community meetings to national and international multi-stakeholder and industry association discussions. We are committed to interacting with all our stakeholders in an ethical and transparent manner. We strive to demonstrate integrity in everything we do.

Our approach to stakeholder dialogue takes into account the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Business Conduct. Before any major developments or large expansions, it is a requirement to conduct an impact assessment, in line with internationally accepted standards such as IFC and UN Guiding principles on Business and Human Rights. This includes the principle of free, prior and informed consent for indigenous and traditional groups.

Dialogue with the local communities where we operate

We strive for transparency and trust of our operations through dialogue meetings with local communities, plant visits for community members and community volunteer programs for employees. With operations in 40 different countries, the degree of activity is based on the ongoing needs in the local communities.

In northern Brazil, we have regular meetings and plant visits, and also engage with local communities and other stakeholders through the Sustainable Barcarena Initiative and other social projects.

Dialogue with associations, NGOs and other institutional stakeholders

We regularly participate in roundtables, seminars and other discussions with UN Global Compact, ICMM, ASI, and World Business Council for Sustainable Development, as well as with a range of NGOs. Through these dialogues we seek improvements, insights and learnings from our stakeholders.
