Our strategy: Making more for less

We have always been in business for a reason. When founded in 1905, Hydro’s objective was to resolve one of the world’s biggest challenges at the time – to feed a starving Europe and end world hunger.

Our purpose is still to create a more viable society. As the world is different today, the way for us as a company to fulfill this purpose has radically changed, too. That is why we now make sure that our knowledge can be used to lead the way creating industries that matter for years to come. We can only make this happen if we work together.

We hope we can inspire you to join us to create more for less.

To tackle climate change, the world needs to produce and consume in a new way.

We need to produce more for less.

Over the last 25 years, more than a billion people have lifted themselves out of extreme poverty.

The development of these societies will demand more energy and materials such as aluminium, so that more people can get access to a safer and better lifestyle.

So, the world needs to work on several fronts:

  • Take recycling, we need to increase that and at the same time make sure that any new materials are ethically sourced and produced with as low emissions as possible.
  • We need to make a shift in the world’s energy system ongoing from fossil to renewable.
  • This shift together with electrification and digitalization are changing the energy landscape dramatically.

For Hydro, this means we have to increase the use of recycled aluminum already in circulation. We need to build businesses and supply chains that ensures that we keep the reusable resources in the loop.

We need to invest in industries that pollute less. We believe in doing so we can support increased demand for goods and at the same time cut emissions.

Increased urbanization. Focus on sustainability and shift to electrification. These are the megatrends that we work to meet in Hydro.

Hydro today is in a unique position as we can capitalize on our more than 100 years of turning natural resources into valuable products with the focus on a safe and inspiring workplace for our 30.000 employees in more than 140 locations.

We are growing in renewable energy and low carbon aluminum to support increased demand for goods and at the same time work to cut emissions. Hydro is committed to leading the way towards a more sustainable future, creating more viable societies by developing natural resources into products and solutions in innovative and efficient ways.

We can only achieve this if we work together.  Material suppliers, manufactures, recyclers, producers, designers and all of us through our daily consumption. Join us in our work to make more for less.
