Hydro Extrusion in North America is able to produce the non-heat-treatable 1xxx series of aluminum alloy in extruded sections with a purity of at least 99.0% aluminum for alloy 1100 up to 99.6% aluminum for alloy 1060.

Most applications require greater strength and different properties than pure aluminum can provide. This is accomplished by adding different types, quantities and combinations of alloying elements and/or through temper differences. Alloy 1100, for example, contains slight additions of silicon, iron, and copper for strength.

Although it is slightly stronger than alloy 1060, alloy 1100 is used in similar applications. Its characteristics make it ideal for chemical and food handling equipment, food, pharmaceutical and liquid containers, as well as cable sheathing, fin stock, spun hollowware, impacted fire extinguisher bottles, electrical conductors, and heat exchange tubing.

Properties of Alloy 1100

This alloy is typically used in applications requiring maximum ductility and relatively low strength. It is:

  • commercially pure aluminum
  • non heat-treatable
  • soft and ductile with excellent workability
  • the most weldable of aluminum alloys
  • work hardens more slowly than other alloys
  • ideal for applications involving intricate forming
  • can be cold formed by bending, drawing or spinning
  • excellent resistance to corrosion
  • responds well to decorative finishes

1xxx series alloys display excellent forming characteristics, which permits them to be easily impacted, cold drawn, deep drawn and bent into various configurations. They can be extruded as profiles, rod, bar and tubing. Other common alloys in this series available from Hydro are 1050, 1060 and 1350.
