Hydro is one of the largest employers in Pará, with 8,500 direct and indirect employees. More than 80% of the employees at the Alunorte alumina refinery and the Albras aluminium plant are from Pará. At the Paragominas bauxite mine 65% of the employees are from Pará.

Hydro is planning on increasing the proportion of positions filled by local residents. To support that, we provide skill development training to local young people and we fund a local initiative to support local companies to become suppliers to Alunorte, Albras and Paragominas.

Supplier Development Program in Pará

Since 2017 we have worked with local suppliers to develop their skills. In August 2018, this was made into a structured one-year training program, covering topics like health, safety and environment (HSE), Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Compliance. The Federation of Industries of the State of Pará is a partner in this initiative.

Young Apprentice Program

In October 2017, we launched the new ‘Young Apprentice Program’ at Alunorte and Albras. It offers over 100 apprenticeships for young people between 18 and 22 years old from Barcarena and Abaetetuba in Pará.
