Performance optimization and capacity expansion

On November 29th, the first hot billet was pressed and the new 8-inch extrusion line at the Rackwitz location was officially put into operation. With an increase in extrusion capacity by around 30%, the state-of-the-art facility will meet increasing demand in the future, especially in the areas of construction, transportation and general mechanical engineering. A significant step for a factory that already processes 27,000 tons of aluminum per year and employs a team of 250 people.

The increased production capacity will enable Hydro to respond more flexibly to customer requests and further optimize service quality. The even faster and more efficient processing of orders will lead to optimized customer satisfaction and long-term partnerships. The third extrusion press not only further increases the level of service for our customers, but also supports our sustainability efforts.

Sustainability and energy efficiency in focus

An outstanding feature of the new press is its focus on sustainability and energy efficiency. As part of the factory expansion, an innovative cooling system was installed that represents a resource-saving solution. This technology makes a significant contribution to reducing water consumption and electrical energy. Hydro not only focuses on ecological responsibility, but also positions itself as a pioneer in sustainability.

Another process improvement is the continuous aging oven. The continuous oven with its two-chamber system is not only 30% faster than previous batch ovens, but also saves 20% energy with this change in technology.

Aluminum preheating is also being revolutionized through an innovative process with a new energy-saving system. It heats the billets from room temperature to up to 90 °C by using residual heat from gas furnace exhaust and a self-developed air-water heat exchanger system. With a closed water circuit, automatic water level control and corrosion-resistant design, this system sets new standards in efficiency and environmental friendliness, with the ability to increase efficiency to an impressive 90%.

The installation of these energy-efficient systems demonstrates Hydro’s commitment to environmentally friendly technologies. The commissioning of the extrusion press also promotes the local economy and strengthens the position as a reliable partner in the aluminum industry, explains Matthias Hellmann, Managing Director of Hydro Extrusion Rackwitz.
