The Novle power plant began operating in 1967. Votna is the reservoir for the power plant and is regulated between 1019 and 977 meters above sea level.

Power is generated at Novle from a water drop of 280 meters and one Francis turbine. The water from Novle is sent on in a tunnel to the Røldal power plant.
Novle is part of the Røldal / Suldal development, where power was originally produced for Hydro's aluminium plant in Karmøy.
