The longstanding award, coordinated by Serve Kentucky and given to one or two businesses in the state each year, honors organizations that demonstrate exceptional volunteerism and service, and highlights Hydro Henderson’s long‑term, people centered approach to community engagement.

“Being a good neighbor means taking a long‑term perspective in the communities we are part of. Strong communities are built through trust, continuity and partnerships. We're proud to work alongside Henderson County Schools and organizations like Junior Achievement, which help prepare young people for their futures by supporting them in practical, meaningful ways. This can be building life skills, supporting basic needs, or simply making sure every child feels seen and valued,” says Duncan Pitchford, Head of Recycling, Hydro Aluminum Metals USA.

Located in western Kentucky along the Ohio River, Henderson County is home to around 44,000 residents and a close knit community where schools, employers and local organizations play a central role in supporting families and economic opportunities.

Supporting student success in Henderson County

Hydro Henderson’s community involvement and engagement with Henderson County schools reflects a holistic understanding that student achievement and workforce readiness depends on meeting both academic and essential needs.

At East Heights Elementary School, Hydro employees participate in a monthly birthday recognition program ensuring every student is celebrated with a personalized book, cupcakes and handwritten notes. What began as a single initiative has since helped inspire a county wide model, with all public elementary schools in Henderson County now supported by local business partners.

"Hydro's support goes far beyond their financial contributions. Their employees show up, engage with students and help make learning relevant. That kind of consistency and commitment has a real impact on young people and the schools we serve," says Melissa Walker, Family Resource Coordinator, East Heights Elementary School.

The company’s contributions extend to providing school supplies, hygiene items and uniforms to students experiencing hardship. In partnership with South Middle School, Hydro helped establish a student food pantry, addressing food insecurity that can affect attendance, focus and learning outcomes.

In addition, Hydro employees volunteer with Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana, delivering financial literacy and career readiness education in classrooms. The company has also supported initiatives such as the Happy Feet Program, school food and backpack programs, hygiene stations, uniforms, and school supply drives, helping remove barriers that can affect attendance, confidence, and learning.

    Employee engagement and leadership

Hydro’s community initiatives are driven by employee engagement and local leadership, including the dedication and long‑standing commitment of Lacey Alexander, whose commitment has played a key role in building trusted relationships across the school system.

“This recognition reflects the passion and care our employees bring to the community every day. We are especially grateful for Lacey’s leadership and commitment, and for colleagues who volunteer their time and energy to make a meaningful difference for students and families in Henderson County,” says Malia Sellers, Operations Director at Hydro Henderson.

Over the past three years, Hydro Henderson has contributed more than $100,000 to school and youth focused initiatives, and approximately $250,000 to broader community programs over the past five years.
