Hydro strengthens TerPaz community program in Brazil

Hydro has reached new milestones in its support for the TerPaz community program with the opening of community centers in Barcarena in late 2025, and most recently, in Paragominas. The centers are part of a broader, long-term effort to expand access to essential services for local communities across the State of Pará.

From 2022 to 2025, Hydro has contributed NOK 719 million (approximately BRL 397 million) towards the construction of community centers in Brazil under the TerPaz program. The program focuses on providing access to health services, vocational training, sports activities, legal assistance and social development opportunities.

The new community centers in Barcarena and Paragominas form part of seven community facilities known as Usina da Paz, supported by Hydro and its partners. An additional three centers have been completed in Belém, along with one center in Moju. A seventh center in Tomé-Açu is under construction.

“Hydro is committed to strengthening the resilience and opportunities of communities in the regions where we operate. The TerPaz program and Usina da Paz community centers are a strong example of the positive outcomes that can be achieved when industry and government work together to promote social development,” says John Thuestad, Executive Vice President for Hydro Bauxite & Alumina.

Hydro’s investments form part of the company’s broader efforts to contribute to long-term, sustainable development in Pará, where it operates bauxite mining in Paragominas, alumina refining at Alunorte and aluminium production through the joint venture Albras.

    About the TerPaz program

Established in 2019, TerPaz (Territórios pela Paz) is a social development program created by the Government of Pará to expand access to essential public services in vulnerable communities across the state. As part of the program, community centers called Usina da Paz are constructed. The Usina da Paz community centers offer free services in areas such as health and dental care, legal assistance, education, vocational training, sports, culture, and citizenship support.

The centers function as integrated hubs designed to strengthen social inclusion, reduce inequality and improve opportunities for local residents. Hydro partners with the Government of Pará to construct and deliver the Usina da Paz facilities in the municipalities where the company operates.

In partnership with the Government of Pará, Hydro has helped deliver six Usina da Paz community centers: three in Belém and the others in Moju, Barcarena and Paragominas, with a seventh now being built in Tomé-Açu.
