Hydro, automotive supplier Shape Corp. and General Motors are demonstrating how aluminium from end-of-life products can be recycled and returned to new automotive applications, supporting increased circularity in the mobility sector.
The collaboration marks one of the first U.S. implementations of Hydro CIRCAL in a structural, safety‑critical automotive application.
“By bringing recycled aluminium back into demanding vehicle applications, we can reduce embedded emissions, strengthen material circularity and make better use of the resources already in circulation,” says Duncan Pitchford, Vice President Recycling, Hydro Aluminum Metal.
High-recycled aluminium for automotive applications
Hydro will supply Hydro CIRCAL from its U.S. recycling facility in Cassopolis, Michigan. Shape Corp. will engineer and assemble the front bumper system to GM specifications, with integration into the Cadillac OPTIQ platform.
By sourcing recycled aluminium locally and making it in Michigan, GM strengthens U.S. production and supply chain resilience while demonstrating how regional recycling networks can return valuable materials to new vehicle applications.
Hydro CIRCAL uses aluminium recovered from end-of-life products such as vehicles, windows, doors and electrical cables. The material is remelted and transformed into new aluminium products through Hydro's recycling operations.

The product offers a market-leading carbon footprint of 1.5 kg CO₂e per kg of aluminium, or lower, while meeting demanding automotive requirements for strength, energy absorption, corrosion resistance and formability. The low carbon footprint means Hydro CIRCAL delivers an estimated 70 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to the North American average for primary aluminium production.
How the component is used
The front bumper beam is a structural crash‑management part located at the front of the vehicle, behind the visible bumper cover. It absorbs and distributes impact energy in collisions to help protect passengers, pedestrians and critical EV systems, an application where material choice is essential.
Using Hydro CIRCAL in this part demonstrates that aluminum with high post‑consumer recycled content can meet demanding performance needs while helping lower embedded carbon footprint.
About Hydro CIRCAL
Hydro CIRCAL is Hydro’s recycled aluminium product line containing a minimum 75 percent post‑consumer scrap with third‑party (DNV) verification. Each batch carries verified documentation to support customer traceability and reporting. In North America, Hydro produces Hydro CIRCAL at its U.S. recycling operations, including Cassopolis, Michigan.
