Belonging in action: Supporting a school community in Texas

At North Hopkins Elementary in Texas, recess should be a moment where every child can take part, connect with classmates and feel that they belong. But for some students with mobility challenges, the playground has not offered that same opportunity.

Hydro is now supporting a project to help change that. Through funding for an inclusive piece of playground equipment, the Inclusive Orbit, as well as repairs and improvements to the existing playground, the aim is to create a space where more children can play together. The goal is also to help them feel that they belong.

“This reflects Hydro’s commitment to the communities where we operate. Through local partnerships and targeted support, we aim to contribute to projects that create lasting value and respond to real community needs,” says Tiffany Lux, Human Resource Manager at Hydro Aluminum Metal in Commerce, Texas.

For the school community, the project is about more than equipment. It is about removing barriers in everyday life and making sure more children can take part, side by side with their peers, not watching from the sidelines.

A small space with a wider impact

North Hopkins is both a school and home to a special education department, serving not only its own students, but also children from neighboring districts who rely on the campus for specialized support and resources. The impact of a more inclusive playground reaches far beyond a single schoolyard.

The playground is also used by families and children outside school hours, making it an important gathering place in the wider community. By helping create a safer and more inclusive environment, Hydro is supporting a project that strengthens a sense of community, belonging and opportunity for many children and families.

Living Hydro’s values through local action

The initiative reflects Hydro’s values of care, courage and collaboration, ensuring every child feels seen, included and able to take part. By working together with the school and the community, the project helps remove barriers and create opportunities for children of all abilities.

“Inclusion starts in everyday life, in the ways children feel seen, valued and part of a community. By supporting this project, we hope to create a space where more children can play together and feel that they belong,” says Tiffany.

For the children who will use the playground in the years ahead, the result may be simple, but significant: the chance to belong.
