Aside from their shapes, aluminum angles are made of different aluminum alloys and can have different tempers. Aluminum angle stock has a myriad of uses in construction applications in nearly every industry. It is considerably less expensive than wood, is lighter in weight, insect proof, and resists warping and cracking from water damage.
Architectural angle stock features a sharp 90-degree angle on the outside and the inside of the corner where the two legs meet, and the thickness of the aluminum material is constant throughout its entire length. Architectural angle stock is made from 6063 series aluminum alloy and is often finished with a -T6 temper, meaning it is solution heat treated and artificially aged. Common in extruded architectural shapes, 6063 aluminum is produced with extremely smooth surfaces that make it easier to anodize. Architectural angles are used when appearance is of primary importance, such as in architectural molding and trim, window and door construction, and furniture.
Structural angle stock, on the other hand, has a more rounded inside corner where the legs meet and a sharp 90-degree angle on the outside. The legs are tapered on the outside so the thickness is not consistent. Structural angles are generally made from 6061 series alloy, also with a –T6 temper. The 6061-T6 alloy employed in aluminum angles meets the requirements of heavy-duty structures such as truck and marine components, railroad cars, tank fittings, roof trusses, floor framing, wire products and pipelines. They offer the advantage of low weight yet provide strong structural support. Structural angle is designed for strength over appearance.
A 90-degree bend is by far the most common for angle stock, although there are angles with less than a 90-degree bend leaving the legs more open than 90-degrees. Angle extrusions are available in a variety of finishes, including brushed and polished finishes.
